Donald J. Maris, 81, of Indianapolis, died at home on June 22, 2006 with his family around him after a lengthy illness.He was born March 8, 1925 in Marshall, IN to J.T. and Rhuie Maris. He graduated from Washington High School and then joined the Army MP in 1943, serving honorably for two terms in the African Campaign, and in Italy and Rome.Upon returning home he worked for the Marion Co. Sheriff, and with his father at the Taystee Bread bakery. He later worked for Beltline Railroad, retiring for medical reasons.He was a lifelong member of over 50 years of the Evergreen-Oriental Lodge No. 500 F. & A.M., and of the VFW, past commander of Post 2839, Commander and Chaplain and life member FatherÂ’s Auxiliary No. 22, former Chaplain for 14 years of VFW Post 261, VFW State Commander in 1983-84 11th District, State Chaplain in 1991 for 9 years, Post State at Whiteland 6864, and a member of American Legion Post 495.He enjoyed fishing, especially at St. Joseph Island in Canada, and golfing.Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 25th from 3-7:00 PM at Indiana Funeral Care, Harry Moore Lawrence Chapel, with a Masonic Service at 6:00 PM. His funeral will be Monday at 11:00 at the funeral home, and he will be laid to rest with military honors at Washington Park East.He is survived by his:Wife, Irene Young-Maris;Children, Donna Leavitt of Greenfield, IN and Jay Maris of Laredo, TX;Stepchildren, Jimmy Young, Roger Young, Ronnie Young, Joanna Davey;Five grandchildren, several step-grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and cousin Dick Maris.
